Class Descriptions

  • Youth Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Ages 7-12)

    These classes are divided into Youth Gi BJJ and Youth No Gi BJJ. While not essential for the first few classes, students will be expected to wear a traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gi to gi classes. This uniform allows for a more controlled and technique oriented practice that is ideal for learning the key positions and techniques that make Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu the single most effective martial art for self-defense.

    Students typically wear rash guards with grappling shorts and/or spats to no gi classes. These classes incorporate most of the same techniques seen in gi classes, but put an extra emphasis on wrestling an opponent to the ground and attacking from the top position.

    Students will be taught positions from which they could apply submissions, however these joint locks and chokes will not be applied.

  • Youth Boxing Skills (Ages 5-10)

    In this class, students will receive instruction in the the fundamentals of boxing. While too young for actual sparring, kids will learn a range of boxing techniques; managing the distance between themselves and an opponent; and proper footwork.

    Learning these techniques and principles safely is the main focus of this class. As such students’ striking will be limited to hitting pads and working with instructors.

  • Teen Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Ages 13-17)

    These classes will center on detailed instruction for taking an opponent to the ground, controlling their movements, attaining a superior position, and applying techniques that result in submission. While not essential for the first few classes, students in this class will be expected to wear a traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gi to gi classes. This uniform allows for a more controlled and technique oriented practice Concepts such as leverage, distance management, and various methods of control will be taught as a means of neutralizing physical characteristics such as strength, size, and athleticism.

    Students typically wear rash guards with grappling shorts and/or spats to no gi classes. These classes incorporate most of the same techniques seen in gi classes, but put an extra emphasis on wrestling an opponent to the ground and attacking from the top position.

    Students will be learning to apply submission holds with control and care for their training partners. Closely supervised grappling sparring will occur once students have demonstrated a proper degree of control and use of many safety guidelines. This type of sparring, called “rolling” does not involve strikes such as punches or kicks.

  • Teen Boxing Skills (Ages 11-17)

    Students in this class will be introduced to techniques and concepts concerning all aspects of engaging an opponent on the feet using their hands

    Safety is paramount, and taking care of your training partners will be a central part of each and every class. Full contact strikes will not be allowed in this class. Light contact will be used as part of specific training scenarios, combined with a lots of pad and heavy bag work.

  • Adult Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Ages 18+)

    Students in this class will learn everything from fundamental movements and techniques, such as arm-bars and triangles, to advanced concepts concerning controlling an opponent on the ground and effectively submitting them. While not essential for the first few classes, students in this class will be expected to wear a traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gi. This uniform allows for a more controlled and technique focused practice. This uniform also allows for a wider variety of submissions, positions, and guards to be learned and practiced.

    New students will first learn how to keep themselves and their training partners safe, along with a basic introduction to grappling and the common positions they will encounter. Sparring will occur once students have demonstrated a proper degree of control and use of many safety guidelines. This type of sparring, called “rolling” does not involve strikes such as punches or kicks.

  • Adult No Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Ages 18+)

    Similar to our Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class, in this class students will learn the single most effective martial art for self-defense. Most students studying grappling take part in both gi and this “no-gi” class. Students will learn all of the ground techniques seen in mixed martial arts, minus the strikes, with a focus on wrestling and effective submissions. Students typically wear rash guards with grappling shorts and/or spats.

    New students will first learn how to keep themselves and their training partners safe, along with a basic introduction to grappling and the common positions they will encounter. Sparring will occur once students have demonstrated a proper degree of control and use of many safety guidelines. This type of sparring, called “rolling” does not involve strikes such as punches or kicks.

  • Adult Striking Skills (Ages 18+)

    While beginner friendly, this class will offer both fundamental skills and techniques, along with advanced concepts in a kickboxing context.

    New students will first learn how to keep themselves and their training partners safe, along with a basic introduction to common techniques and scenarios. Light sparring will be incorporated into class at times. Students can expect both a workout and coaches to provide detailed instruction that will develop your skills in all areas of the stand up game.

  • Open Mat

    While coaches will be present for these time slots, they will be focused on their own training. As such, during this time participants will not be directly supervised. Members may use this time to work on their grappling, striking, or mix it up. This may include drilling, position study, or positional sparring, but most commonly consists of sparring rounds with various partners. Any instruction during this time will be incidental, as your coaches will largely be using this time to focus on their own training.

  • Women's Kickboxing

    This class will focus on fundamental skills and concepts of a complete striking game. It is for women only, and added to our schedule to be a more approachable class. Whether your goals are fitness or fighting related, this class will help you reach them.
