• Ben Cox

    Owner and Business Development Lead

Ben is a former Registered Nurse and currently works for the Community Mental Health Initiative as a homeless shelter support worker in Corner Brook. After receiving his blackbelt in karate, he discovered Brazilian Jiu-jitsu when he noticed a Gavin Tucker seminar being held in 2017. He was instantly hooked, and six years later now holds a purple belt under the instruction of Colin MacMichael and Paul Chaisson. When not attending Jiu-jitsu classes, Ben enjoys spending time with his fiancée and their dog, boxing, and working out at the YMCA.

  • Colin MacMichael

    Owner & Head Grappling Instructor

In 2010, Colin started his BJJ journey in Saint John, New Brunswick with Jon Kelly of MXT. After finishing university he moved to Halifax and trained at the local MXT affiliate Cia Paulista. Colin's work and leisure allowed him to train all over Atlantic Canada, Ottawa, Boston, Miami, San Francisco, and as far away as Western Australia.

In 2014 after receiving his blue belt from Maximiano Thrombini, he won the Under 77kg category at the Montreal Open.

In 2015, not long after being promoted to purple belt, Colin participated in the first Submission Series, which is now called Fight League Atlantic, resulting in a tie. Well known local UFC fighter, Gavin Tucker, also participated in this event.

From 2016 to 2019, Colin had a short hiatus from competition and regular training due to a serious back injury as well as living in a rural community. During this time, Colin offered demonstrations as part of the local school's physical education classes, and taught an after school class for kids aged 10 years and up.

After moving to Corner Brook in 2019 he started training and teaching classes at Corner Brook BJJ with George Alteen.

In 2021 Colin was promoted to brown belt with Jake MacKenzie saying it was the "most deserved brown belt I've ever given".

Two years later Colin received his black belt from Jake, and now stands as one of the very few BJJ black belts in the province.

  • Paul Chaisson

    Owner and Curriculum Development Lead

Paul has a natural penchant for both teaching and learning. His background as a Special Education teacher gives him the practical experience to address the needs of a wide range of learning needs in his classes. As an instructor in the gym, he aims to apply an understanding of learning theory developed in graduate level classrooms to the practice of submission grappling.

Paul’s lessons are light on filler. He is focused on practical and effective Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that questions many of the established norms and traditions. He is currently a brown belt under Jake MacKenzie.
